Lupus is a long-term autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, from the skin, to the joints, to the organs.
There are some celebrities who were suffering from lupus too like Selena Gomez. She was diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and been through chemotherapy treatments for lupus. According to her, lupus has affected many organs, especially the kidneys which explained why she had kidney transplant.
There are 4 different forms of Lupus with different complications.
1. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- SLE is the most common type of lupus which accounted for approximately 70% of all lupus cases. Severity of SLE can be mild or vital. This is because SLE may cause severe damage towards the major organs like the heart, lungs, kidneys and brain.
2. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE)
- CLE is limited to the skin which the immune system only attacks the skin. The complications are severely irritating which it might cause various types of rashes and lesions. Around 10% of lupus cases in the world are CLE.
3. Drug-induced lupus
- Drug-induced lupus is caused by certain prescription of medications (drugs). Around 10% of lupus cases in the world are drug-induced lupus. This type of lupus normally caused by high doses of certain medications. Symptoms of drug-induced lupus are similar as SLE. However, the symptoms are usually subsided when the medications are discontinued.
4. Neonatal Lupus
- Neonatal lupus is a very rare condition where it affects infants of “lupus mom”. This type of lupus is caused by antibodies from the mother acting upon the fetus in the womb. At the initial stage after born, baby may experience the symptoms like skin rash, liver problems and low blood cell counts. Fortunately, these symptoms typically disappear completely after 6 months and it does not last any long-term damage or effect towards the baby.
Is Lupus Fatal?
Seriousness of lupus can range from mild to life-threatening.
Lupus is caused by the “malfunction” of immune system in which our immune system attacks the healthy cells and tissues. Lupus can damage many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels and brain.
Lupus itself is not as fatal, but the long-term complications of lupus are life-threatening. Kidney failure, cardiovascular disease and infections are the most common complications of lupus mortality.
What are the symptoms of Lupus?
Patients with lupus are experiencing significant symptoms, such as pain, extreme fatigue, hair loss, cognitive issues, and physical impairments that will affect every facet of their lives. Other symptoms can include sun sensitivity, oral ulcers, arthritis, lung problems, heart problems, kidney problems, seizures, psychosis, and blood cell and immunological abnormalities.
People with SLE may experience a variety of symptoms that include fatigue, skin rashes, fever, and pain or swelling in the joints.

How to cure Lupus with medication?
There is no cure for lupus. Medications prescribed by doctors are to control and reverse the complication effects of lupus. However, it is crucial to seek medical care and follow the medical instructions.
Besides medications, maintaining healthy lifestyle and diets are critical in reducing the lupus symptoms too.
1. Regular Exercises
Exercise will increase the release of endorphins which will reduce pain and create feelings of pleasure to our brain. In this way, it is helpful for us to manage our stress and inhibit stress hormones that will negatively impact the body.
2. Enough Sleep
Getting sufficient sleep is crucial for the body to rest and recharge. Our body tends to churn out stress hormones to keep us awake and alert when we are sleep deprived. This is particularly harmful for the health.
It is important to get at least seven hours of sleep per night to optimize our health.

i. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat soluble nutrient essential to the health and functioning of the immune system. Vitamin D is beneficial in reducing inflammation. On top of that, Vitamin D also helps to maintain strong bones.
Food sources of vitamin D include fortified cereals and plant-based milks. However, there is a limited food source. Hence, Vitamin D supplements have been another source of Vitamin D. It can be found in 2 different forms: D2 & D3. Sunlight is also a good source of Vitamin D. Supplemental daily doses of Vitamin range between 1,000 and 4,000 IU, depending on blood levels.
